Introductions Sept 3

Although I know some of you may know each other either in person or from other online class I do not know many of you. So, what level  and what program are you in? What is your passion within your field? What do you teach and what level? What are your goals? And most importantly what are your top 10 favorite songs or pieces of music. I cant wait to meet each of you and begin this journey.

  1. Good Morning, I guess I will dive in first! I am Chris Brandt, and I am beginning my last school year in the MAE program. As an artist, I think I enjoy ceramics the most, although I am a painter and enjoy sewing and weaving. I teach visual art to Prek, kinder, primer and 4th graders, and then I teach 8th grade ceramics. I teach at a Prek - 12 all girls school in Dallas. My goal in this class is to come away with something that will affect my teaching. I always seem to, I can not wait to see what it is! Music....that is hard. When you have lived as long as I have, there is a lot of music to love!! And, it depends on my mood. I love Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nelson, Jamie Cullum, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, ( I am listing off Spotify!), Crosby Stills Nash and Young, the Eagles, Simon and Garfunkel.

  4. Good evening! My name is Carla Hidalgo but I go by my middle name Melissa (should explain my username :) ). I'm starting my 3rd year as a high school art teacher in Little Elm, TX. As an artist, I love photography and ceramics. I just started the photography program at my school and I'm having so much fun teaching it! My goals are to always learn and to apply my learnings for the benefit of my students. I definitely want to give them the best that I can give. I love having music playing all the time so this will be kind of tough. I'll also be all over the place but here it goes: some 80's classics are great (Journey, Def Leppard, Roxette, REO Speedwagon), Indie/Alternative is always playing in my car (The National, Bon Iver, The Killers, Ben Howard), and some current pop culture to keep up with the students I teacher. Oh and Coldplay, always Coldplay :)

  6. Hello, I am Carrie Paige Hubbard Gates and go by my middle name, Paige. I am Director of Visual Arts at a small private school in Midland Texas. I am starting my 22 year teaching and have taught grades 1-12. Exciting for me this year because I have moved to a new refurbished building and I am starting a high school metals/jewelry class, thanks to Future for talking me in to take metals one summer, and John Garrott for his great instruction.

I always thought my passion in art was drawing and painting, but now I am enjoying printmaking and ceramics. Oh, how I miss glassblowing from the summer!

My goals are to make the process of making art contagious to those around me. I hope to gain more tools to excite the students to take risks and express themselves in a caring environment.

Like many of you, I am all over with my music choices. One song stands out recently because a couple of days ago, my sister reminded me of the time we were in Jr. High driving with a friend and her older brothers in a van through Boulder Colorado, the door open, and jamming out to the Who, My Generation. We concurred it was a very cool experience. Isn’t it interesting how music can spark memories?

    Other songs of interest lately:

Brent Amaker and the Rodeo “Man in Charge”
Michael Franti & Spearhead “The Sound of Sunshine”
I’m still not tired of Bruno Mars “Uptown Funk”
    Gipsy Kings “Moorea”
Fatboy Slim “Weapon of Choice” - Video with Christopher Walken makes it great.
    Tennessee Ernie Ford “Sixteen Tons”
Neil Young “Motorcycle Momma” and “Old Man”
Dean Martin “Marshmallow World” or any Christmas music by the Rat Pack

    6. How do you like being a Director of Fine Arts!

    7. Keisha - Director is more paper work and meetings, but a good way to make sure art is not forgotten. Also, I have a great team of art educators that make my job fun.

  7. This is my last year of the MAE program. I teach K to 5 in the Ft Worth area. Two of my current goals are to finish my degree and to transform my art program into a vital, vibrant creative experience.  I am primarily a painter, but feel more at home as a sculptor and work in clay and stone as time allows.
Music is an everyday part of my life. Some of my all time favorites:
When I'm With You by Don Williams
The Year That Clayton Delaney Died by Tom. T Hall
Sunshine on my Shoulders by John Denver
    Blood Roses by Tori Amos
    T.V. Eye by The Stooges
Run of the Mill by Judas Priest
Hand of Doom by Black Sabbath
Ballad of Dwight Fry by Alice Cooper
    Bloody Hammer by Roky Ericson
The Salesman Denver Max by The Blood Brothers
    Babydoll by Hole...
Okay, so that's eleven and I didn't get to classical, or funk, or bluegrass or any of the newer bands I listen to...

  11. Hello, I am Debbie Caillet and I am a K-5 elementary educator with also some administration duties. I have been teaching art for 21 years and been assisting the Fine Arts Director with NISD’s art program for 7 years. I truly love teaching a strong art foundation to young budding artists and supporting art teachers.
I just completed a full year in the MAE program with a little more than a year left- which makes me kinda sad because it has been the best experience. I am positive I am not alone in this thought. I had a fabulous summer full of mudslinging and museum education. WooHoo! My passion is bookmaking or artist books. My goal truly is to get back to what my soul has been screaming for since I graduated college-ART!! I am enjoying the making, the discovery, the research, the reading, the learning… all of which, I’m sure, will help guide me into my role as an Art Coordinator one day but for now, I am taking it all in and loving it.
    Hmmm…favorite songs…
    ANYTHING BEE GEES
    Deceptacon, ROBBIE WILLIAMS
    Plane, JASON MRAZ
    Crazy, Heavenly, SEAL
    Mellow My Mind, SIMPLY RED

  12. Hi, Everyone! My name is Elena Popan (Roxana is my middle name) and I am an international student from Romania. I am starting my third year in the Fine Arts PhD program where I focus on the study of film in a social and political context. I am also interested in photography and performance art. I have very little teaching experience, but I try to overcome this by learning as much as I can from those around me who are more experienced. I will hopefully start teaching next semester in the School of Art and in this respect, I am sure that this class will prove useful.
I consider music a very good and old friend, with which I must say I have a pretty complicated relationship. It was extremely difficult to limit my choices to 10 songs, but here they are:

The Divine Comedy – A Lady of a Certain Age
    Alela Diane – The Rifle
    Kate Bush – Cloudbusting
Tom Waits – San Diego Serenade
Tori Amos – Silent All These Years
    Deine Lakaien – Nobody’s Wounded
Nina Simone – Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood
Asaf Avidan – Her Lies (In a Box II)
Pink Floyd – The Final Cut
Grace Jones – I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango)

Sorry David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Nick Cave, Lou Reed, Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, Wilco, PJ Harvey, Lhasa de Sela, Florence and the Machine, The Black Keys, Bjork, Janis Joplin, Acoustic Ladyland, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, Van der Graf Generator etc. etc. Given another day, I know that many of you would have make it to the list.

  15. Behold my long lost reply. Invitation didn't come through my tech email for some reason, had to send it to my personal account. Ah well. My name is Sarah and I'm a third year MFA in jewelry design and metalsmithing. I'm taking this course because of a continued interest in teaching high school after receiving my degree (my home state accepts an MFA for teaching at that level). I am currently teaching the beginning metals course here at Tech. My favorite songs.

Evanescence "Imaginary," "Lies," and "Eternal" (Origin album) and "Even in Death" (2016, Lost Whispers album)
    Chainsmokers "Something Just Like This"
Gotye "Somebody That I Used to Know"
Nightwish "Ever Dream," (Century Child) "Ghost Love Score," (Once), "Deep Silent Complete" (Wishmaster)
Stones "You Can't Always Get What You Want"

    Thanks y'all

    2. I took it for two years in high school and loved it! Don't be afraid to introduce them to techniques that may seem "challenging" for that level. I did several hollow forms (one shell, one constructed, two boxes) in my time there, and another student raised a bowl. We did a lot of work with silver and even some cloissone--all in year one!

  16. August 28th marked the beginning of my 3rd year of teaching. Sometimes a book crosses my path, leaving me more motivated and more enthusiastic about walking back into classroom the next day; this book was definitely one of them. Although I consider myself a forward-thinking, flexible, innovative teacher, this literature served as a mirror, helping to illuminate those things I'm already doing well and uncovering areas in which I need to improve.
In chapter 6, I was really interested in learning about Multi-Human Curriculum. Art is universal and while there are countless disciplines, which might reasonably serve as a means to understanding culture, such as history, sociology, mathematics, and science, only art lends itself to the full range of experiential and capabilities. This is why art serves so wonderfully as a universal language, as a means toward understanding the history, culture, and values of other peoples. As human beings build virtual bridges into unknown cultural territory, learn, share dreams, and creatively work together, mankind will know itself as citizens of a rich and truly global society. And if citizens of a global society are to live in peace, goods, services, and technical information are exchanged, but values and visions, as well.
